Earth Day Conservation Fair

Fifty thousand people attended Earth Day Conservation Fair '97 at State Capitol Park in Sacramento. Half of the visitors were students on field trips from schools throughout northern California. The largest annual Earth Day event in the country featured 120 environmental exhibits, the EcoStyle Fashion Show, a "Plastic PETting Zoo" with animals made from PET plastic soda bottles, a Giant Can Collection, a live concert by Big Mountain and celebrity host Alan Thicke. Corporate sponsors including The Home Depot, International Paper, Target, AT&T Wireless and Ford Motor Company donated more than $500,000 in financial and in-kind support to the event and related promotions. Extensive media coverage doubled the public exposure the event sponsor, the California Department of Conservation, received from its annual paid advertising campaign.
